The fire at 8 Eden Place began in a sunroom at the rear of the home and had spread to the roof by time firefighters arrived around 10:30 p.m.

“The fire had completely consumed the sunroom and was extending into the roof of the home itself,” Norfolk fire prevention officer Cory Armstrong-Smith said Saturday in a news release.

“When the fire was brought under control, the home had suffered significant damage.”

Armstrong-Smith added the fire was confined to 8 Eden Place and did not damage neighbouring homes.

“The single occupant of the home escaped without injury with the assistance of a neighbour, who also called the fire department,” he said. “No firefighters were injured controlling the blaze.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Armstrong-Smith took the occasion of Friday’s fire to remind the community that the excessive storage of items in a building can add to the intensity of a fire if one breaks out as well as the sum total of property damage.
