Student attends Portage Collegiate with COVID-19

Southern Health Sante-Sud announced a student with a confirmed case of COVID-19 attended the Portage Collegiate Institute on November 23, 2020.

Southern Health released a notification to parents and guardians of students at the school informing them a confirmed case is connected to a Grade 11 class.

The letter says, “Dear Parent/Guardian of Portage Collegiate Institute, Manitoba Public Health officials have advised Portage Collegiate Institute on November 30, 2020, that a confirmed case of COVID-19 was in the school on November 23, 2020. The confirmed case is connected to the Grade 11 class.

Portage Collegiate Institute is working closely with public health officials and following their recommendations. Be assured that Public Health investigations to identify individuals who may have been exposed begin within 24 hours of a confirmed laboratory test. Close contacts connected to the case have been identified and advised to self-isolate.”

The letter says anyone who had close contact has been contacted directly by public health. The school will remain open to all other students and staff, who can continue to attend the school in person.

The letter also notes, “Portage Collegiate Institute is not permitted to release the name or any identifying information about the confirmed cases of COVID-19 to any member of the school, community or media. If you have not been contacted by public health officials, your child(ren) have not been identified as being exposed to COVID-19 from this case.”

However, if your child develops a new onset or worsening of any symptom linked to COVID-19, even mild, immediately isolate them from others. It is recommended your child get tested for COVID- 19 as soon as symptoms appear, and that your whole family isolates.
